Camp Tiki Sailing Program for Kids

After years of being asked about it, we are happy to announce the launch of our brand new youth sailing program—Camp Tiki! Unlike jargon-heavy classroom based curriculums, Camp Tiki gets kids right out on the water, learning hands-on “soul-sailing” that emphasizes touch, feel, intuition, and communion with wind and water—taught the way Capt. David Ryan learned when he was a boy. Optional outrigger canoe and SUP paddle boarding builds a deeper connection with all kinds of water activities.

Lessons are taught on our 26’x15’ sloop-rig, hand-built Polynesian catamaran Mon Tiki Mini. Mon Tiki Mini is seaworthy enough to make open ocean crossings, but small enough to be unintimidating to new sailors, and responsive enough give you instant feedback when you are sailing her well.  Combined with her expansive deck (a hallmark of the Mon Tiki fleet,) she is an ideal boat for beginning your sailing journey.

Skills covered include: learning to rig the boat with basic sailing knots; learning good sail trim on all points of sailing using both tactile and visual clues; learning to make basic observations of wind, tide, current, and local weather and relate them both to sailing well and avoiding danger; and basic navigation and “rules of the road” in order to become a safe and courteous mariner.

Recommended for kids/youths ages 6-14. There is no extended commitment required—you may book a single session, although multiple days are recommended so your child may build and practice their skills. Lifejackets provided.

$150/participant per 3 hour session. Sessions run 9:30am-12:30pm Monday-Friday from July 6th through July 31st.
