Hello, and welcome to the website for the Mon Tiki Project. Let me tell you a little about myself.
My name is David Ryan and I’m the captain and owner of Sailing Montauk, a charter sailing company in Montauk, NY. Mon Tiki is the next step in the evolution of our company; a keel up build of a Coast Guard certified charter sailing vessel.
Mon Tiki is a James Wharram designed Tiki 38, and when completed, she’ll have a USCG certificate of inspection (COI) for 24 passengers; a one-of-a-kind boat, and will be the only Coast Guard certified sailing vessel operating on Long Island. Every aspect of the design and construction of Mon Tiki is oriented towards our guests’ safety and comfort as our first priority.
Plans for Mon Tiki are currently undergoing review by the USCG Marine Safety Center. When the review is complete and the plans are certified, our build will begin. We’ll chronicle the build here on this website, and hope you’ll check back from time to time to see how we’re doing.
While the plans are undergoing safety review, we’re lining up a build site, construction crew, and sailing crew for next season. You can read more about that on our Get Involved! page, and who knows, maybe there’s a job for you, on the build, or when we’re sailing next Summer.
Meanwhile, to get a little better idea what Mon Tiki will look like and what she’s capable of, below is a video of the Tiki 38 Pilgrim. Pilgrim was built by a french builder/skipper in the New Jersey Highlands and then he and a crew of friends sailed her back home to France via the Azores, Portugal, and Spain.
